The 1996 Congress was chaired by Anthony Killykeen-Doyle ~ Ireland, Vice~Chairman. The Chairman, Tob Swelheim ~ Netherlands, sent his apologies as he was unable to attend.
The theme of the 1996 Congress is on judging and by extension on breeding to a higher quality. In addition to conformity with the Standard of Excellence, which is the prime responsibility of breeders, we must also aim towards vitality, health and vigour.
"We must leave behind us a hound that not only conforms to the Standard but has the health and strength necessary to ensure a long and happy life for the hound and is also a source of pride and joy to the owners. The Irish Wolfhound needs our commitment to safeguard its future. We need to keep many separate lines alive. Concentration on the winning dog or lines could lead to a drastically reduced gene pool. The future of the Breed lies in our hands."
